Japanese Language Courses
The International Education and Research Division offers a General Japanese Course, and a Co-learning in Multicultural Classrooms Course for international students, teaching, and research staff. The application window for the first semester is from mid to late March, and applications must be submitted online during this time frame. Likewise, applications for the second semester will be accepted from early to mid-September. Students at the introductory level can also apply at the end of May for the summer quarter and in the middle of November for the winter quarter. General Japanese Course
Various levels are offered in this course (Introductory 1-4, Intermediate 1-3, and Advanced) and each level contains the following subjects:
- Introductory: Grammar, Communication, Survival Japanese, Kanji & Vocabulary
- Intermediate: Interaction (basic and practical), Expression (basic and practical), Comprehension (basic and practical)
- Advanced: Interaction, Expression, Comprehension, Japanese Seminar, Business Japanese.
Students are free to choose the unit of study according to their needs; however, class levels will be determined based on a placement test and previously completed study of Japanese.
Eligibility: students must meet one of the following requirements:
- Must be an international student enrolled at Hokkaido University with a student visa as a bachelor’s degree program student, research student, graduate student, special auditor, or special research student.
- Must be overseas teaching or research staff or office staff member who works at Hokkaido University.
*Please note that non-degree and regular auditing students are not eligible to take these courses.
Co-learning in Multicultural Classrooms (CMC)
Co-learning in Multicultural Classrooms (CMC) is a collaborative learning class that is designed to improve the language skill and academic skills required to be successful in university studies through class discussion. Learning Japanese is not the main purpose of his course. Group work with the aim of getting Japanese and international students to work together is the central focus of the course, therefore, students are required to participate in class activities proactively.
Eligibility: students must meet the following requirements:
- Must be an international student enrolled at Hokkaido University with a student visa as a research student, graduate student, special auditor, special research student, international teaching or research staff, or office staff member who works at Hokkaido University.
- A certain level of Japanese language ability is required.
* Please note that non-degree, international undergraduate students, and regular auditing students are not eligible to take these courses. However, international undergraduate students may take them as a “Freshman Seminar; Co-Learning in Multicultural Classrooms Courses.”
