Driving Precautions

Update date: November 6, 2026

In Japan, traffic moves on the left side, and most rental cars have right-hand drive. Please pay close attention to road signs. Please refer to the following for rules and etiquette regarding driving.

In Japan, driving under the influence of alcohol is not just a traffic violation but a “crime.” If caught driving under the influence, it may adversely affect your visa application or renewal process. Even if you have consumed a small amount of alcohol, never drive a motorcycle or car. Additionally, it is prohibited to knowingly allow someone who will be driving to consume alcohol, encourage or persuade someone to drive under the influence, or ride in a vehicle operated by a driver under the influence of alcohol.

Please read the trafic safety information provided by the Hokkaido Prefectural Police on the following webpage before driving in Japan.
