Closure of Bank Account
Update date: November 1, 2024
Even if you withdraw all money so that the savings balance is 0 yen, it does not mean you have canceled your bank account. You need to go to the bank teller to cancel it. To cancel the bank account, bring your passbook, cash card, residence card, and your inkan. However, if you must pay for bills, such as a cellphone, utilities, the Internet, or credit cards, be sure you do not cancel before completing all payments. If you cannot pay your bills, the Japan Credit Information Reference Center Corp (JICC) will add your name to their list. If your name is on this list, you cannot make a contract with or apply for any services such as a credit card, a cellphone, or a house loan. Furthermore, you run the risk of being sued for nonpayment of fees, and in the unlikely event that this occurs, you will have trouble the next time you attempt to enter Japan. If for whatever reason you cannot close your account before leaving Japan, please consult with your bank.
