Bank & Cashless Payment

Update date: November 1, 2024

Bank

Opening a Bank Account

When opening a bank account, you will be asked to present your residence card to confirm your identification and your period of stay. You may not be able to open a bank account if your residence card is valid for less than three months. Although some banks will allow you to open an account with your signature, you may also need an inkan (stamp), so it is best to ask in advance.

Automatic Payment and ATM Cash Card

Utility payments can be made by automatic bank transfers from your account. For more information, ask at the counter of your bank. If you apply for a cash card, you can conveniently withdraw cash from your account through automated teller machines (ATMs).

A cash card is a card issued when opening an account at a financial institution. It is used for withdrawing or depositing cash at ATMs, and unlike a credit card, it cannot be used for making purchases or paying for services.

Banking Hours

Most banks are usually open from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on weekdays and closed on Saturdays, Sundays, and national holidays. Since their services are becoming diversified and business hours have started to vary, please inquire at the bank you intend to use for more information. ATMs are usually in operation on Saturdays, Sundays, and national holidays. However, operating hours differ depending on the bank and branch. Handling fees can vary depending on the time of the transaction. ATMs are also located at many convenience stores where they can be used 24 hours a day.

Cashless Payment

There are many cashless options you can use for shopping. In addition to credit cards, electronic money, and debit cards, the use of mobile payment through smartphones is also spreading. The touch-type method allows speedy payment, while the QR method allows you to refer to your purchasing history. There are three types of cashless payments—prepayment, where the money is electronically deposited in advance; debit cards, where the money is withdrawn from your account on the spot; and credit cards, where payment settlement takes place sometime after the purchase. Please note that the availability of cashless payment options varies depending on the region.
